Resolved Question: Where would i offer my services as a tour guide/driver/hotel booker etc etc for the Football World Cup?

Having lived in SA all my life, I feel I can offer a good service to people from the UK going to Sa for the football. I know most the routes, where to go and where not to and I know the better hotels at better prices. I will hire cars, drive, book air tickets, hotel accom, take to proper restaurants (not only the tourists traps) take to attractions etc etc. Any advice would be welcome. Yup, I,ve heard all the horror stories, which is why I feel if you are taken around by someone who knows the way the country ticks, you wont get ripped off.

Resolved Question: Anyone like to read about some really funny true stories from UK?

A guide at Windsor Castle was struggling to make herself heard over the roar of low flying aircraft coming into land at nearby Heathrow. She was interrupted by a tourist who demanded what was wrong with the town planners, and why had they built the castle so close to the airport. The highlight of a cruise liner's visit to the Alaskan port of Valdez was a guided tour of the southern end of the great 800 mile pipeline through which, the guide informed them, some 1.3 million barrels of oil came daily from Prudoe Bay in the north. When he asked if there were any questions, someone solemnly enquired, `How do they get all those empty barrels back up to Prudoe Bay?' `Good home wanted for year-old Basset bitch. Understands every word I say, but ignores it.' Card in Portsmouth shop window. A group of tourists escorted around the British Houses of Parliament suddenly found themselves in the presence of the then Lord Chancellor, Lord Hailsham, resplendent in full wig and gown. Spying behind the group the figure of Neil Marten MP, the Lord Chancellor called out in greeting.`Neil' with dignified vigour. And all the tourists did. A tourist, on a driving holiday in Britain was reported to have been overcome by the Cotswolds but astonished at the number of villages with the same name. `After Chipping Sodbury,' he said, `there were three villages in a row called Loose Chippings.' An English classics scholar, trying to impress his tour party colleagues on holiday in Athens, offered to converse in Greek with the local ferry officers at the docks to enquire about departure times. The locals, after recovering from fits of laughter, then revealed to the rest of the group, in perfect English, the scholar's question: When do the galleys sail for the Isle of Aegina, O sailors?' In 1981, fifty San Francisco nudists arrived in Miami for a national convention to find their airline had lost all their luggage, including their clothes. The 1982 Association of British Travel Agents conference in Phoenix, Arizona, had to change its venue at the last moment when it discovered that its original hotel had been double booked. The story is told, apocryphal no doubt, of the DJ working on a small and remote radio station in Scotland midway through his programme late at night on 1 October 1977. News came to the station that Bing Crosby had died (the station producer happened to be on the phone to the States and picked the word up almost as it occurred). The DJ thought he could possibly be the first person in the UK to publicly announce the death, so he put on a long track and rushed off to record library to get an old recording to play. Upon returning, nervously excited by now, he put the first record onto the turntable without looking at it and broke into the record then playing with a sombre voice: 'I am deeply sorry to have to inform' you listeners that I have just received news from America of a great tragedy. The legendary Bing Crosby is dead. As a humble tribute, I would like to play one of his songs,' and as he switched over to his Crosby 'selection', the melody was beamed out, 'Heaven . . . I'm in Heaven...' BEWARE OF TRAINS GOING BOTH WAYS AT ONCE. - Notice at Durham level crossing

Resolved Question: What program/film is this?

On halloween me and a friend were staying in a hotel in Manchester (UK) and had E4 on at about 6/7pm and were watching something but we didn't have a tv guide or information button or anything to find out what it was. This is all I remember of it though: it was in some high school in America and there was a scene where a girl drops her pencil on the floor in class and the boy next to her bends under the table to get it for her and holds onto her hand, when he does that she can see the solar system, stars and stuff... Can anyone help me? We didn't have time to watch much more of it but it's driving me crazy trying to find out what it is! Thanks xx

Resolved Question: Cape Town, or move on ?

My wife and I have just recently retired and it has always been a dream of ours to visit 'S Africa' not for the Game but just boring old site seeing !The problem of course is safety and where to go and what to do. We're thinking of leaving in February for 5/6 weeks, (a good time to go ?) and would kick off on a flight down to Cape Town and from there....?? We're not millionaires but would like decent , homely accomodation , smaller hotels or B&B. But should we stay around the area or think of renting a car, or train and move on somewhere else ?Decisions, desisions! The guide books are full of things to do, but it would be nice to have a few personal recommendations if possible, and then we could take it from there...thanks a lot. Mike, London, UK.

Resolved Question: THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER Revisited - What do you think?

Because Kevin B (allows response), Dr Dave (does not allow response), Timess2 (does not allow response) took such exception to my question: THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER - Two Different Versions.... ... .... Two Different Morals - are there any left? I find it necessary to add this and ask you to consider some things: This nation was built on the idea that if you don’t work, you don’t EAT! It has to do with PERSONAL Responsibility, not dependence on the United States Government. [It is also found in the Bible, but I know that is of little concern to libs. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (King James Version) 10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.] If you do not make enough to purchase (this assumes you are not an illegal alien), what you need and or want, go out and get a second, third, fourth, and as many other jobs as necessary in order to sustain yourself. Call it a rant if you want, but I’m rather tired of those that throw fire bombs here, yet do not allow a response. So, here is the article and IF you read it, see how many times the choices these people not only made but continue to make directly affect where they are today. Lost Vegas From PETE SAMSON US Editor in Nevada Published: 24 Sep 2009 LOVEBIRDS Steven and Kathryn share a well-organised home in bustling Las Vegas. Dank ... Steven and Kathryn in their bedroom Read more: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/2651937/The-people-living-in-drains-below-Las-Vegas.html#ixzz0Uskr3s2A They have a neat, if compact kitchen, a furnished living area, and a bedroom complete with double bed, wardrobe and bookshelf featuring a wide selection including a Frank Sinatra biography and Spanish phrase book. And they make their money in some of the biggest casinos in the world. But their life is far from the ordinary. Because, along with hundreds of others, the couple are part of a secret community living in the dark and dirty underground flood tunnels below the famous strip. Rather than working in the bars or kitchens they "credit hustle", prowling the casinos searching the fruit machines for money or credits left by drunken gamblers. Despite the risks from disease, highly venomous spiders and flooding washing them away, many of the tunnel people have put together elaborate camps with furniture, ornaments and shelves filled with belongings. Steven and girlfriend Kathryn's base - under Caesar's Palace casino - is one of the most elaborate. They even have a kettle and a makeshift shower fabricated out of an office drinking water dispenser. Home comforts ... the couple's kitchen under the famous city Austin Hargrave But their bed and many of their belongings are on crates to keep them off the damp floor. Despite it being hot and dry outside, their tunnel is wet from water being sent down from nearby construction work. As he gives a guided tour of home, Steven Dommermuth explains: "We use our imagination a lot. "Our bed came from a skip outside an apartment complex. It's mainly stuff people dump that we pick up. One man's junk is another man's gold. "We get the stuff late at night so people don't see us because it's kind of embarrassing." He later gives directions to the tunnels' own art gallery, a collection of graffiti by local artists and some by the underground residents. Steven moved into the tunnels two years ago after he lost his hotel front-desk job due to a heroin problem he claims he kicked in January. He now works the same hotels credit-hustling, and his life retains other similarities with the one he left behind. He says: "We work our way down the strip. The most I've ever found is 997 dollars (£609) on one machine. I've found about $500 a few times. But normally $20 or so is enough to call it a night. "We buy food and supplies like shampoo and soap. Last night I went and watched the new Quentin Tarantino movie Inglourious Basterds up at the Palms Hotel." Going underground ... the entrance to the flood tunnels Rex Despite his established set-up, Steven claims he eventually wants to leave the tunnels but can't because of two outstanding arrest warrants from drug possession charges two years ago. It is estimated the population of the underground community could be as many as 700. As well as credit-hustling, they earn their money off the wildly excessive city above by begging and "dumpster diving" - raiding bins and skips. There are around 350 miles of flood channels running under Las Vegas. Most inhabitants are in the area under the city's strip. Another couple, Amy and JR, have lived in the tunnels for two years, having moved to Las Vegas in search of work, wealth and a slice of the famous Sin City action. Putting down the Twilight vampire book she is reading for the third time, Amy, 33, explains: "My husband and I have been down here two years th http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/2651937/The-people-living-in-drains-below-Las-Vegas.html

Resolved Question: HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT?

Does anybody know anything about hotel/restaurant management qualifications. I am 34 years old and have worked in travel and tourism since I was 21. I have worked as a holiday rep (tour guide) and as a travel agent. I feel like I am drifting a bit though and want to start giving myself some structure in life. As I seem to connect well with people, don't mind working unsociable hours and will do whatever it takes to make a customer satisfied (within limits obviously!) I think that hotel management might be the future for me. I also enjoy a business side to things so I think this will be a career that will combine all of these elements. As I try to be a positive thinker, I want to aim for the top in my new chosen profession, I think gaining qualifications (I have none other than basic school leavers qualifications) is the next step and it is here I need advice: What is the best course for me to look at? What is the best university for this (in the UK or abroad as I have lived abroad before I have no fear of this!) Are online hotel management degrees given the credibility needed to take me to the top of this profession? (just in case I can not secure the finances needed for me to attend university full time) Would a straight business degree be better than hotel management as I fully intend to have my own hotel one day? Although I have more enthusiasm now for education than I did at age 18 I am now 34 and will obviously be 37/38 by the time I have any qualification, will this seriously go against me? Are there any other other courses or suggestions of any sort that people have? Thank you.

I am new to the United kingdom (less than 3 months), I live in Chichester. (1) people told me if i wish to go to the northern part of England, i have to go by train to London Victoria train station first and then walk to another train station to travel to northern part of England, true? (2) please tell me the steps, which station is for the northern part of England? how to get to there from London victoria train station? (3) how much time needed : from london victoria train station to the ? train station for travelling north? (4) i need to come back to Chichester on the same day. So i need to catch the first train to London and then go to the station for travelling north and then be back to London victoria station to catch the last train back to Chichester. Is it too complicated? and Is it possible? I dont mind only sightseeing for a few hours in northern part of England. i am only on my own, i dont want to book a hotel and stay overnight , so have to come home on the same day. Resolved Question: Backpack trip to east coast from the UK?

HI everyone!We(4 of us) are planning a 10-14 day backpack trip to the states from the U.K. (NY,Phil.,Washington...)next summer. We are planning to hire a car and cruise towards the south from NY, a few days stop in each bigger city.It would be a sort of "DIY" tour to keep costs low but not sure if we can really to it or it would be better to go on an organized tour with fixed hotels/motels,tour guide etc.?What do You think? (There are built in GPS in hired cars aren't there?) Plus if anyone have some suggestions on what's worth to see - and not to miss apart from the compulsory sightseeing spots is more than welcome. Thank You!

Resolved Question: I'm writing a guide book and need peoples help?

I want to do up a novel/guide book. Kind of like Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy except for a Psycho's Guide. I would like all who answer this to write a review (Fake of course) to a hotel. Must have the following things in mind when writing it: - Resident Psycho: Traits/Politeness/Murderer or Hostage taker. - Rooms: Neat/Messy/Blood all over the room/Room contains everything your desire to be perfect - Food: Strange/Perfect/Eating off the Floor - Surroundings: Forest/Beach/Middle of Nowhere texas Give each area a rating and and overall rating out of 5 axes. Feel free to email me your review and pass this challenge onto friends. Just make sure I can email you back with the a copy of the final result/draft so you can see you review. For those who might have heard of something similar this was inspired by the UK sci-fi show RED DWARF. This is not for me to take credit. This is for purely personal pleasure. Its also a way for people to let there creative minds flow see how twisted others can be. I have no desire to get this published only pass it to those who have contributed. THIS IS FOR FUN PEOPLE. Like those silly 'answer these 100 questions" type email.
